THE TRAGEDY OF LOVE AND BLIND CONFIDENCE
This Japanese tragedy in three acts depicts the life of Cio Cio San the fifteen-year-old child bride, said to be as fair as a butterfly. The opera is a passionate, painful love story, set in a reinvented East. Drawing on the more freeform and floral artistic styles that gained popularity at the Universal exposure in Paris in 1900 (and in Turin in 1902) Madame Butterfly is a classic example of artistic Realism and is one of Puccini’s most beloved masterpieces.
